palavras portuguesas pelo mundo & portuguese words around the world

fonte/ source

zebra                                                       albatros - albatroz                                   lancha
mosquito                                                  bambou - bambu                                     jangada
tank - tanque                                            baroque - barroco                                    mimoso
monsoon - monção                                   caste - castas                                         caramelo

...

there i was navigating through the pages of the portuguese embassy when i came across a very curious information - japanese words coming from the portuguese language.
fonte/ source

now, any portuguese worth its salt knows that "arigato" り が と あ come from the portuguese "obrigado" that means "thank you", right ??
not quite.

after seeing the embassy site i did a little research and wikipedia destroyed one of my deepest convictions. "arigato" does not come from portuguese "obrigado". it is pointless to say that i was shattered.

according to wikipedia, "arigato" is the modern form of "arigatashi" that the archaic japanese consists of assemblage "ari" the verb "aru" (be, exist) and "katashi" an adjective that means trouble. the expression comes from the way the buddhists praised two deities, and thanked for the buddhist teachings. literally, the word means "it is difficult", something like "i have difficulty expressing my gratitude for his act"

i wasn't expecting that.

but then that japanese words come from our beloved language?
since we were the first to establish contact and trade with the japanese back in 1543, some influence we must have had in their language.

and yes, we did. here are a few words of Portuguese origin:
fonte/ source

but now i've found this i was curious, how many languages did we influenced in the world?
apparently a vast amount of them. from the english, french, through the malay, kikongo and africans and many more. it is an incredible fact.

i couldn't find words in all languages but here are a few from english, french and spanish. to point out that my search wasn't very intensive and the information may not be the most accurate.

english                                              french                                                  spanish
zebra                                                 albatros - albatroz (albatross)                  lancha (speedboat)
mosquito                                            bambou - bambu (mamboo)                    jangada (raft)
tank - tanque                                      baroque - barroco (baroque)                    mimoso (tender/ loving)
